Father Chirino wrote Relacion de las Islas Filipinas, which he later transformed into a longer and more
detailed account of Jesuit work in the Philippines. Father Chirino’s work is the fi rst history, not just of
the Jesuit missions, but also of the Catholic missions in the Philippines and served as the source for
later histories.

For one reason or another, this history was never published and remained in manuscript form, until
the historian Jaume Gorriz i Abella edited it with copious notes. This is the history now presented,
albeit without the notes, in an English translation.

About the Translator

José S. Arcilla, S.J. is professor of history at the Ateneo de Manila University, a member of the
Academia Filipina de la Lengua Española, Corresponsal de la Real Academia, and a regular
lecturer on history-related topics. His other publications include An Introduction to Philippine History,
now in its eighth printing; and his latest, 150 The Ateneo Way (2009)—in commemoration of the
sesquicentennial anniversary of the Ateneo de Manila—which won the Quill Award recently.
